I wish to have a quote for... (1) Adagio Entertainment System, include (1) Dual AM/FM Tuner Card; (1) Interface for iPod. Include CEN-IDOC-DS docking station; (1) Adagio Audio Server, with 2 outputs, 160 GB.
I'm looking for a system a do it yourself (diy) can come home to and play different music throughout the house. I need speakers. Any brand of speakers. Don't want the cheapest, or the most expensive. (3) pair of 8" speakers (Are 8" speakers overkill for these rooms?), one 20x20, one 20x40, (both with 9' ceilings) & a 20x30 garage w 12' ceilings, (2) single stereo speakers 6.5" (Again would appreciate your help). One would be used in a bathroom with steam and humidity and the other in the bedroom. Lastly (1) pair outdoor speakers, Polk Audio Atrium or equal quality and looks. Sincerely, Barry Hodges

question: can one substitute an iPOD for the Audio server....or more specifically, if one does use an iPOD instead of an audio server, what is the trade off in terms of sound quality? I'm assuming all cd's are ripped into the iPOD at 320kbps. Thanks. jason

Yes David. I agree. This attitude of selling a project and making your margin on the products is also very standard in the Netherlands. Partically in the residential area. In the business area it is different. This is exactly the reason why I want to build something like Couture Digital for the Netherlands because I feel there is a hole in the market at this moment ans I want to fill it before someone else does it...
Maybe we can exchange some knowledge off-line?

Note: the article is from Crestron.

Another great article,
I particularly agree with the part on undervaluing your service.
At Couture Digital our installation service is the thing that makes our profit. Many installers who have come from a hi-fi background still add large mark-ups to their products and seemingly do the installation for peanuts.
While this approach may work at the moment, I see it only lasting so long, as time passes and more and more products come onto the market, margins will begin to shrink and businesses built on this model will struggle. Undervaluing your service also undermines your brand, making customers question your skills/knowledge. Increasing your service charge dramatically after years of rock bottom prices will be very tricky, it wont sit well with old customers, and even referred customers will most likely expect your prices to be as low as they were for the person who referred them to you.
In residential installation many referral jobs come from the trades, such as builders, kitchen fitters, interior designers and architects, Custom installers should adopt a similar business model to these trades, charging by the hour for their labour and supplying products at retail price or even below.
